Spitting image

The grey and apricot patches are on different sides but still, pretty close!

Left behind: not what they seem

Here are some more of the things I've resisted at the op shop lately.  Even though they have double uses!

My Creative Space: calico and blue

I've been loving the combination of blue and calico lately, so I thought I'd have a change from my usual black on white, or white on black feathers and print up some blue ones.  Which leaves my lounge looking like I've just plucked a giant macaw!

I'm going to turn the feathers into brooches and patches and hopefully bring them along to the next First Thursdays Market.  2 May, 6pm, St. Kevin's Arcade.  Might see you there?

Dormy Triumph

This is my latest blanket label - from a ratty old blanket at the St. Vinnies in Onehunga.  I'm still searching for the right technique to draw them - this one's mainly a pencil drawing with a bit of gouache over the top.  I might paint one of my extremely gaudy blankets next - maybe the one that is hot pink and mustard!

Rubbish photos

I had a very welcome day off work the other day and how did I spend it?  Rummaging through stuff like this:
I had heard the inorganic collection was in Avondale, so I grabbed my camera and jumped on the train, hoping to find some good mattresses to photograph.  And I was rewarded with these lovelies!
Mr. Millicent Crow came along too and was very tolerant of spending hours in piles of rubbish in the rain!  We also had lunch at the lovely Salvation Kitchen, visited the great op shops of Avondale and found a gorgeous 70s sideboard in the inorganics that we were very tempted to bring home.

But this pink and red rose number was the find of the day!  I may have squealed when I found this beauty:

More mattress enthusiasts here!

Birds of a feather

I drew these huia birds the other day as a birthday present for my dad.  The huia has always intrigued me...and sometimes I wish I had a huia tattoo.  I wonder what they were like before they became extinct?

My Creative Space: left behind in Kohukohu

While one of the attractions for going to Kohukohu over Easter was the op shop open on a Sunday, I ended up leaving empty-handed.  I did, however, admire the jam-packed space that is Secondhand Rose, and was very tempted by a few goodies.  Here are some of the things I left behind:

I also didn't buy these teddies making a desperate bid for freedom, but they looked like they needed rescuing!

Kohukohu

We escaped the city for a couple of days over Easter and headed north to Kohukohu.  My friend told me about a place you could stay where there was a flock of white ducks, an op shop that opened on Sundays and honesty boxes selling crafts and limes and I was sold.
We caught the ferry to Rawene, were tempted to take home a stray dog (well I was anyway), played the ukulele by candelight when the power went out, walked many kilometres and found a whole lot of beautiful pheasant feathers.  The ingredients for a good holiday!

My creative space: loot

After drawing so many pictures of things I didn't buy from the op shop I thought I should show you some of the things that have made it home with me lately.  Here's some of my op shop loot:

Hmm, two of those things haven't been worn yet...I might have to be ruthless with them.  The polka dotty dress has had plenty of wear though!  I'm thinking about redrawing my op shop sketches and maybe turning them into a zine...it might help to convince me to bring home fewer treasures!

Save the date!

The next Auckland Art & Craft Fair will be on the 29th of June and I'm very happy to announce that Millicent Crow will be there!  Updates on the Fair can be found here on the Auckland Art & Craft Fair blog.  I've been brainstorming some ideas for some new goodies to make for my stall, and I really should fire up the silk screen and print some more of these:
